In Florida, it's spring and the weather has been marvelous. I've been back outside on the bike and even the Gulf has warmed up to 70 degrees.

Train safe and enjoy your week.

Busy Season by Jukka Valkonen

From Jukka...
Hi David!

Today was my first race of what will be a BUSY season! This was a duathlon. I'm not a duathlete, so great test race. I've been training really hard at Ant's, doing some incredible stuff. This race I tagged as a "C" race - no taper, train right into it, set a realistic target, and go hard but if needed, back off. I knew the course, as the TT is a famous road course that has 3 monster hills, each a mile+ at 7-9%. There is a team TT race that Chris Lieto likes to do on this same course.

This race is run by a master's guy who does nationals and WCs every year in the du. It's always attended by either pure duathletes, or by hard core cyclists. The distances were 2/19/2. Last year's winning time was about 1:22 and my AG winning time around 1:26. The bike splits were just over an hour, which is fast for this course. Ant's been pushing me the past 2 weeks, so my quads and shoulders were smoked going into this. In fact, I trained at Ant's yesterday.

Triathlon Swimming by Mark Sortino

When I started in triathlon many years ago, I didn't put as much emphasis on swimming as I did running and cycling. This was because I had been a swimmer in high school and felt like I had a decent freestyle technique and was already a bit faster than most of my competition. This decision served me well for the first few years but as I became a better triathlete, I realized that I was actually losing some time in the swim to some of my peers. Over the past 10 months I have been involved with a dedicated triathlon swim coach as well as swimming regularly (3-4 times/week) with a group of triathletes and have seen tremendous improvement!

Nearly every triathlete can benefit from the following 2 important ingredients to their triathlon swim training: a coach trained in stroke technique and coached workouts in a group setting.

Major Ed's Corner

Greetings from D.C.
Our training for the Best Ranger Competition is going well. We are completing Week 7 of our train-up and the miles are starting to pile up. This week we will complete 50 miles of running and rucking, in addition to our strength and conditioning sessions 4 times each week.

I'd like to write a little bit about the 18-hour assessment that we conducted about 3 weeks ago down at Fort AP Hill, VA. The assessment began shortly before 7 AM and lasted until after midnight into the next day.

The day began with a 5-mile run with our IBA (body armor) on which we complete in just under 42 minutes. (The IBA weighs approximately 22-24 pounds).

Train-Low, Race-High: Part 1 By Ben Greenfield

You roll out of bed and glance at your watch. You've got a 12-mile run on tap for the day, and limited time to get it in. Do you lace up and head out without grabbing a banana, bagel, or handful of sports gels, or do you make sure you have sugar to consume before and during the effort? If you're a good little endurance athlete, you probably raised your hand and said "Eat!"

Contrary to popular belief, multiple studies have shown that several components of your aerobic fitness are enhanced when you train with low levels of storage carbohydrate or low levels of carbohydrate intake during the exercise session.
