Dave Scott Q and A
Mr. Scott –
I just returned from IM Arizona where my day was going as planned until mile 8 into the marathon and nausea and vomiting forced me to walk the majority of the last 18 miles. I used Gatorade on the bike and had to stop to pee 2 x. No orange in what came back just the water and L/L Gatorade from the run stations. This is the 2 nd time in the IM that nausea has affected me. Any help?
Thank you,
Roger
Dave's reply:
Roger,
The number one problem with GI Distress is over eating or over consumption of fluids. Eating or drinking too much on the bike can cause stomach issues during the run! When gravity takes over on the run the potential disaster heightens. Your body draws water to your gut to dilute the extra sugar. Unfortunately, the stomach cannot digest the food (or fluid) until after you have stopped exercising. Simply the higher concentrates of carbohydrate or protein “locks up” your system and the end result is nausea, irritable stomach and slowing down of performance.
Roger, I need more information 1. Total fluid/food consumed. 2. Hourly caloric intake. 3. Body weight and speed. Let's follow up on your problem. You are not alone.
Best,
Davd
