Lavaman Race Report April 6, 2008 Kona Hawaii

Lavaman , the first week in April, is a great season opener to see what great shape you are NOT in. The course is great, starting out with a 1.5 K swim in A-Bay (near the Hilton Waikaloa) in clear 80' flat water. Depending on the tide, you may have to swim over a few coral heads almost shredding your fingers with each stroke. The bike course includes Mile 75 to 87 of the World Ironman Bike Course. Unlike during Ironman when you are just trying to survive the last portion of the bike , the Lavaman Bike course is a time trialist's delight -12 miles out, and 12 miles back on a smooth rolling course. You have to navigate a tunnel at the turn around, but based on the wind you can really fly on the way back. The run course is more Xterra than Olympic distance, since various portions of the 10 K course include a single track path on crushed lava/coral and sand.

The 2008 version had perfect conditions-flat water, light winds, and moderate heat by the end of the run. 800 registered, and 650 people started/finshed.

29 year old Brea Wee, top amateur in the 2007 Ironman World Championship, and Kona resident, won the Female division in time of 2:04:51 , and went almost 8 minutes faster than her 2007 time. She has turned Pro for the 2008 season and just returned from a 3 week training camp in Australia where she was consistently thrashed by Aussie's finest. She is racing Olympic Distance races early season then moving out to ½ Ironman races in preparation for her Pro debut in Kona 2008.

James Cotter, formerly of Kona, now of Austin , Texas , where he worked as an au pair, for Susan Dell until the end of last year, now a personal trainer/coach and pro triathlete, smoked the course in 1:54:56 destroying last year's winner, Tim Marr, with a 35:03 10K run on a very tough course.

Both Brea and James should have a great season!!

For anyone looking for a early season race and some warm weather to test your fitness, I would strongly recommend Lavaman. The after party is second to done. They serve real food (turkey wraps, grilled chicken breasts & hamburgers) and Kona Brewing draft beer for the 4 hours you have to wait for awards, so you have to pace yourself well. Age Group awards were sushi sets with chop sticks.

Good luck at the races, and remember to take your MAP.
