Greetings,
Congrats to all who braved the cold in Oceanside.
Well done. Nice to see many of you there and in
Tempe. This week: Should you stretch?, running
faster, carbs and cycling performance, and body
builders love MAP too. Have a great week!

blend of
organic whole food nutrients, vitamins, minerals,
antioxidants
and liver detox support nutritionals to give the body
what it
needs so that it can continue to perform at its
highest level,
despite the non-ideal conditions it finds itself in.
Why Take a Multivitamin with Detoxification Support?
Here are four more good reasons:
1. Most fish have mercury and chemical residues.
2. Even if we are drinking purified water, most of us
shower
in water that is full of chemicals, or sit in jacuzzi’s
or
swimming pools that are full of chemicals that
enter
our system every day that must be dealt with.
3. Our foods are contaminated with phthalates from
plastic wraps, Styrofoam, Tupperware, and non-
stick
coatings from fry pans, that enter our system.
4. Our clothes, mattresses, and sheets, are full of
chemicals, flame retardants, preservatives, and
anti-fungals, that enter our bodies through the
skin.

| Is stretching before workouts good for you? |
 |
Probably NOT!
The latest from the American College of Sports
Medicine suggests that pre-exercise warm up consist
of only cardiovascular exercise.
1. Several large studies have shown that
pre-exercise static stretching does not prevent injury.
(Med Sci Sports Exerc 2000;32:271-7)
2. Static
stretching decreases muscle strength endurance.
(Strength Cond Res 2005;19:338-43)
3. Quadriceps
strength was reduced by 12% after static stretching
(Med Sci Sprots Exerc 2004;36:1389-96)
4. 20 meter sprint
times were much slower in college athletes following
four 30 second static stretches of hams, quads, and
calf muscles. (Sports Sci 2005;23:449-54)

| MAP Weight Lifting Success |
 |
I’m not an endurance athlete, but I heard about
MAP and decided to give it a try. I’m a weight
lifting gym rat. I am writing to tell you that I could
tell the difference from day one. I took 10 tablets
before my workout. Usually as the sets progress I
get tired and have to really push to get the reps
done. Not so on MAP. I was doing more reps and
higher weights. I was amazed. The difference is
astounding. What a great product. I just donated my
whey protein to the local homeless shelter. MAP
rules.
Thanks,
S.A.

| What do endurance athletes need DURING workouts? |
 |
Carbohydrate feeding during exercise has great
benefits.
The study looked at Dutch cyclists on a 75 minute
training ride at 80% VO2 max. They were tested with
a radiolabeled glucose to see how much of the
glucose drink was used and how much liver glycogen
and lean muscle was metabolized for energy during
the trial. They found that glucose feeding during
exercise reduced liver glycogen usage by 12% and
muscle glycogen usage by 16%. What was even
more significant was that protein breakdown was
reduced by over 60%!
What does this mean?
When the body is not getting enough...

Faster is Better - Part 3 of 3 - Running |
|
|

By Cherie Gruenfeld IM Age Group World Champion
A successful Ironman Triathlon is all about the
run. Sounds like a fairly bold statement
considering you have to get through a 2.4 mile swim
and 112 miles on the bike before you even put on
your running shoes.
Yes, in 2004 we saw Normann Stadler win Ironman
with an astonishing breakaway on the bike, but Kona
historians are quick to remind us of John Howard's
1981 win. The year prior, he had blasted the bike
record only to fade to 3rd on the run. To get the win
in 1981, he backed off 35 minutes on the bike and,
with that more conservative pace, improved his run
by fifty minutes over 1980 and took top honors.
Winning Ironman on the bike has been done, but not
often enough for we mere mortals to plan our race
strategy on it. So, let's proceed with our discussion
of that all-so-important last discipline – The Run.
