Captain Ed's Journal
JWell, after a brutal August where I was only able to train 8-10 times, September has been a good month to get back into the groove.
Shortly after returning from our 3 week training exercise at Fort Campbell, KY and Fort Stewart, GA, I had less than two weeks to prepare for a sprint triathlon (500 yd. swim, 13 mile bike, 5k run) that I had signed up for prior to the training event. I was able to get back into a nice training rhythm prior to the triathlon and felt very good going into the race.
I still do not have a road bike (mine is on order), but was able to borrow one from a friend at work, who just so happens to have an awesome bike.
The triathlon took place on Hunter Army Airfield (where I am stationed), and was a very well run event with close to 180 competitors.
I got out a little slow on the swim in part because when swimming the final leg of the swim route, I could not see because the sun was blaring directly into my eyes. So after finding my way (albeit slowly), I rushed out of the murky river water towards the transition area. I quickly transitioned to my bike and took off.
I was able to average 19.6 mph for the bike leg, despite never really biking, so I was pleased with that.
I knocked out a 21 minute 5k (6:47/mile pace) at the completion of the bike leg to finish in 1:13. I took 3rd in my age group and finished 30th overall.
I had a great time and remembered why I enjoy the sport of triathlon so much.
And despite doing a sprint tri on Sunday, I was able to get right back in the gym on Monday for some rowing and strength training with no issues.
