Captain Ed's Journal
During some recent times of turmoil I was very distracted mentally from training. For the first time that I can remember, I did not want to train. I was going through the motions. The tensions I was experiencing seemed to take away 'love for the game,' so to speak. My spirit felt crushed.
Despite the fact that I had not been training hard, I decided to enter the 'Top of the Rock' 10k at Fort Stewart , GA. I ran okay, nowhere near my capabilities, but about where I expected. I finished in approximately 43:45, and surprisingly won my age group. That race helped me snap out of my mental slump. I realized that I needed to refocus and start training properly again. The last two weeks, I have done just that. I have had two great training weeks and this morning ran over 10 miles and felt great.
I am now preparing to attend US Army Pathfinder School in the month of November, which is one of the military's most mentally demanding schools. I know that workout time will be cut short as I hit the books during the 3 week school, but I know that I am headed in to school in good shape and mentally refocused.
While I have always known that the mental aspect of an athlete's training is extremely important, it wasn't until I experienced this 'mental slump' of my own, that I realized how truly key that proper mental focus was. Through a lot of prayer and long discussions with my wife, my father, and some great friends, I was able to come through this difficult period.
As always, MAP is right there with me through the journey. As I regained my mental focus and began to ramp the intensity back up, I had no issues because of how quickly MAP helps me to recover from each workout.
Thanks.
Captain Ed
