Greetings,
Greetings. This week: brick workouts, how to use a
heart rate monitor to increase fitness, and why
protein quality is important for training and recovery.
Have a great week. - D.I. Minkoff, M.D.
| Why protein quality is important: |
 |
To understand how proteins function in the body,
first, imagine a structure built out of Lego blocks.
The blocks come in different shapes and sizes. When
you put them together you can create nearly any
construction you desire.
Our bodies are made up of proteins. These proteins
are built out of smaller “Lego like” blocks called amino
acids. Depending on which amino acids are used and
in what order, we get all the different shaped
proteins in the body from bones, to muscle, to
cartilage, to hemoglobin, to immune cells, etc.

| MAP Success |
 |
After working with many U.S. Paralympics
athletes at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens Greece, I
was turned on to MAP. I noticed in late 04 and
early 05 while using MAP that my recovery time
was quicker and that my strength in all three
disciplines were noticeably stronger. With my travel
schedule of over 100K per year my training is half of
a typical IM athlete. With the help of MAP I was
able to finish my first IM World Championships with a
9:56, and a bike spilt of 4:55. Without the gains
from MAP and the speedy recovery time I am
sure that I would still be dreaming of qualifying for
the IM World Championships.

| The heart rate monitor as a daily tool |
 |
by Luis Alvarez (The only athlete to have
completed every Ironman venue)
If anyone asks me how to get started in exercise or
how to train for an Ironman I ask back “Do you have
a heart rate monitor?”
All of us that participate in triathlons are addicted to
endorphins. In our case more than using the Heart
Rate Monitor (HRM) to go to a high heart rate, we
have to use it to control it and to get to our personal
appropriate rate.

The Brick |
|
|
|
by Cherie Gruenfeld IM Age Group World
Champion When an athlete decides to expand
from a
single discipline into three and become a Triathlete,
he or she will very shortly learn of "The Brick" and
probably wonder where the term originated. The
most common first guess is the most obvious – your
legs feel like bricks when you get off the bike and try
to take your first running steps. Or maybe it's
because you're laying one workout on the other (the
run on top of the bike) as you would with bricks.
Turns out it's actually named for the fellow that first
advocated this type of workout and, regardless of
the origination of the term, the brick has become a
standard in the triathlon world.
We all know that a triathlon is all about the run and
the unique thing about a triathlon run is that it
follows the swim and the bike. And any triathlete will
tell you, the swim/bike is far more than just a warm-
up for the run. By the time a triathlete gets to the
run portion of his race, he's working on very tired
legs. Therefore, doesn't it make perfect sense to do
much of your run training on tired legs? Hence, the
brick, or the "transition run" as it is sometimes called.
