Greetings,
This may be one of the best issues we have ever
done. It’s packed with information from three of the
best age groupers in the world and all MAP Team
members. Start with Kevin Moats’ article “Running Off
the Bike.” Its got the secrets of podium finishes in
it. Kevin would know, he just again won his age
group at IM Idaho. 50-54 age group in 10:10?! Then
world champ Cherie Gruenfeld on evaluating your
training. Excellent. To finish it off, the only man in
the world who has done all of the IM races around
the world, Luis Alvarez on “Racing in Cold Weather.”
You will get a lot out of each one. Enjoy!
Have a great week.
| Before or during a workout |
 |
Positive Energy is great before or during a
workout. It is full of nutrients that will give
you “positive energy” not a caffeine rush that lets
you down.
I took the Positive Energy for the Mt. Evens race
in Colorado. I was very surprised when I won my age
group. The race is 14
mile race up to 14,000 feet in elevation. It is a very
difficult race as the
end is a series of switchbacks and with each
switchback, the feeling is that
you are at the top, only to be disappointed and see
one more. Also the
oxygen level is decreasing and the lactic acid is
building. It is an
amazing race that was a great challenge and very
rewarding mentally as well
as physically. I find that when I take the spray that
my attitude and
endurance is increased and am not sure what is
happening but it is great. - E.B.

| Competions in cold weather |
 |
by Luis Alvarez I have been lucky, that is
healthy, with enough dispensable time and resources
to participate in 37 IRONMAN competitions around
the world, experiencing different land, terrain and
climate conditions. One of the worst experiences
occurred last month in Japan as I was not properly
prepared for the weather.

| Is your training program working for you? |
 |
By Cherie Gruenfeld
With the season well
underway, your training program should be in full
swing. Racing your goal event will test how
successful your training has been, but by then it's
too late. Much better to take stock of things along
the way and make any necessary modifications to
your training before race day.

Age Group Excellence: Running off the bike |
|
|
|
By Kevin Moats
If you review the race results from the Ironman
World Championship, whether it be the Pro or Age
Group, the top finishers have all mastered the ability
to run a full marathon after 112 miles on the bike.
So how to train to run off the bike?
The theory and reality of Ironman are at odds in
formulating the optimal training plan. In theory, one
should ride steady, starting slow and then picking up
the effort, but certainly not hammering the first two
hours, then limping home.
