  • Monitoring Progress: Efficiency is the Key

    by Cherie Gruenfeld
    Ironman World Champion

With the season quickly approaching, you're probably training with a program designed to help you reach your race goals. On race day you'll know if that plan worked. However, race day is a little late for mid-course corrections, so let's consider how you might monitor your progress along the way to determine if your training plan is working for you or needs some modification.

    Could training rot your teeth?

Did you ever think that training for an Ironman could rot your teeth? Several years ago one of my training partners went for his annual checkup to the dentist and at age 53, he had 6 new cavities!

He realized that it must have been the gooey bars and sugared drinks he was consuming for long hours during training. This month, in the journal General Dentistry, an article appeared which seems to back up this conclusion.

6 Key Facts Everyone Should Know About Protein

Protein is composed of amino acids. Amino acids combine into literally thousands of "complex protein, amino acid chains.

On its own, the body can manufacture 14 of the 22 amino acids it needs. But the other 8 cannot be made by the body and must be obtained from nutrition and supplements.

MAP is 99% absorbed and utilized. No food source or other amino acid or protein source can compare.

"I Can Train Harder and Recover Better"

In my 40's and 50's, nutrition and training approach are critical. Muscle mass and connective tissue becomes the limiting factor for the older athlete. Recovery from hard workouts is the key. WIth MAP, I find I can train harder and recover better than with a basic high carb, high protein regimen. I have been able to build muscle mass and minimize tendon soreness with MAP.

Did You Ever See a Fat Cheetah?

"Did You Ever See a Fat Cheetah? Or, if you want to be fast you must be lean as a cat ... and some suggestions on how you can do it."

Running speed is determined by how fast you can move your body from one point to another in a certain time.

So, given the amount of muscle power you can exert and leg speed turnover, the lighter the load the faster you will go. So fat people will run slower than they could run if they were lean.

It is easy to observe that those winning races are the low body fat guys and gals.

But how does one get leaner and stronger?

There are thousands of opinions on this subject.

Some people say eat protein and no carbs. Others say, eat in "The Zone" or eat according to the "South Beach Diet". Some famous people have said, . . .
