| Q and A with Dave Scott |

From Adam in Reno: Should I do my long run the day
after my long bike each week? I have been doing this
but find the day after a 6 hour bike my run is pretty
awful and I am always concerned I'll get hurt. Do you
ever suggest that the long run be after a few days of
lesser activity so it is more likely to be a good paced
run?
Dave's Response:
Adam,
Yes, yes, yes space 'em out (2-4 days) if you have the
time. Remember . . .

| Would a Body Cleanse improve your fitness? |
 |
What constitutes performance really? Where
does the rubber meet the road to allow one to be fast
and enduring?
Well, it's down inside each and every cell where the
glucose molecules and the oxygen molecules are
utilized to make energy.
Those among us that are gifted to be fast can carry the
oxygen and glucose to the cell quickly and efficiently-
and once there, a plentiful array of enzymes convert
them into energy molecules used for swimming,
biking and running.
Where can the system stall?

Congratutions to Team Member
Alex Mroszczyk-McDonald
When I signed up
for Ironman Lake Placid in
2006, I had high goals, however, during the off season
and as the 2007 season progressed I knew that if I
trained hard enough and smart enough I would have a
shot to be the overall champion. I knew this was
going to require training, lots of training, as well as a
delicate balance between physical training load with
the stress of daily life, (work, family, friends etc.)
In order to do so, often athletes focus on how hard
they can push themselves, until the breaking point,
and when necessary take extra recovery time.
However, this season I found a way to focus not on
how hard I can push my body, but how hard I can
recover.
A vital piece to my training puzzle is MAP.
When taking MAP after a long run or long ride, I
would virtually be able to complete the same workout
the next day, where as . . .

For you young guys this may not seem too funny.
But for those getting on toward the five decade mark
and on, this song, called Remember, by Tom Rush
can get a healthy belly laugh going and is just what
the doctor ordered. Its not fitness, but a good laugh
makes the heart feel better. I hope you enjoy it as
much as I did:

Could a Toxin or Infestation be slowing you down? |
|

Just this week I consulted on a world class athlete
who was not feeling quite up to par. He couldn't put
his finger on it but knew something was not right. His
body showed non specific inflammation on blood
tests. His levels of two key vitamins, folic acid and B12
were low. It was unclear what was going on. In
searching for the answer it turned out he had an
infestation with an intestinal parasite called Ascaris.
This is a type of round worm. These worms can cause
inflammation in the body and can consume some of
the body's key nutrients. Such things as intestinal
parasites or other toxins like lead, mercury or
chemicals can enter our bodies and cause problems
and we may not even know it until we see a real
change in function. Any large scale testing that has
been done has shown that most of us full of such
toxins as are all living animals on the earth.
These poisons bind to key cell enzyme or cell surface
receptor sites and impair the body's ability to generate
energy, maintain immune function, and full recovery.
Once they accumulate in nerve tissue they block the
ability of that tissue to detoxify. Since the nerve
cannot "empty" itself of the toxic metal more and more
accumulate and that can lead to neurological
problems. Common symptoms of toxins of one sort or
another include: headaches, muscle aches, joint pain,
sleep problems, mental fog, fatigue, chronic
infections, mood problems, and hormone
imbalances.
Even in small quantities these can compromise
health and reduce athletic prowess.
