| Q and A with Dave Scott |

From Jim in Ann Arbor: Do you suggest training
through an injury? A lot of days my calves are sore and
I am wondering if I should run or not. Usually if I take a
few days off they are still sore. Should I wait longer
until its all gone?
"Soreness" does not necessarily denote that you have
an injury. Generally sore calves are caused by an
increase in total distance, a higher intensity flat or hill
session. The delayed onset of muscle soreness
(DOMS) is a result of micro-tearing of the muscles
which causes swelling and pressure in the fatigued
(calves) muscle.

In an ideal world our food would nourish us and
give us the nutrition we need to replenish our
systems. Since the world is far from ideal, our bodies,
to survive, need much higher levels of minerals,
vitamins, and antioxidants just to cope with this non-
ideal environment. Getting enough from our depleted
foods is simply not enough.

As I continue to train with MAP, the results only
get more and more positive as I move along towards
the fitness level I had prior to my deployment to Iraq
and being wounded.
come from? Are they
still relevant today?
On August 4th, I ran the fastest 10k time I have run in
over 2 years in 42 minutes flat. While that is not overly
quick, consider that I weigh 210 pounds, with probably
only 8-9% body fat at this point. That will continue to
drop in the coming months as my training intensifies.

Just wanted to let you know I raced long course in
Santa Barbara last weekend and had a very good win.
I actually finished 6 min. faster than when I last raced
there two years ago. So things are going well so far.
Next week I'll start my Peak for Kona.
Thanks

From Julia Peck:
Well you haven't heard from me in a while but that is
not because I am not racing. I am having so much fun
racing and enjoying great health!! In fact..I just read
this newsletter and learned that my all time hero Dave
Scott is the incentive for me to share another great
testimony with you.. I really want that trip to
COLORADO to train with him!!!

IM World Champion Cherie Gruenfeld
Does this scenario ring any bells?
You're meeting the group for a ride. Your schedule
calls for a 2-hour Recovery ride. However, by the time
the group ends up back at the bagel shop, you've
covered sixty hard miles. But so what? You've had a
great time hammering and beat some of the pure
bikers over the big hills. It was a good day. And then
tomorrow arrives and you set out on your scheduled
brick workout, which becomes a low quality survival
day because your trashed legs are screaming. And
about that time, you're wishing that yesterday you'd
done the 2-hour Recovery ride you'd planned.
Maybe your workouts are set down by a coach or
maybe you're self-coached. Either way, if you're
serious about performing well on race day, you need
to understand a key concept on which a successful
training program is based and take responsibility for
adhering to the plan.
