| Q and A with Dave Scott |

From Mira in San Clemente: Do you recommend
doing a full triathlon brick workout before an Ironman?
What distances? How fast?
A brick workout should simulate race conditions.
There are several factors of race conditions that could
be implemented. What are race conditions?

From BB Team Member and world class runner
Laura Swann
It is August, a bit early for me to do serious races
since my season begins in the fall. However, my
husband talked me into doing the Maggie Valley 8k
with him, which is designated as the USATF North
Carolina 8k Championship race. Maggie Valley, by the
way, is in the mountains so you can imagine how
weary I was to race a hard course now when I'm in the
middle of a hard training period. But my husband told
me that he had already entered me so I had no choice
to back out. So, there I was, with the fear of being
crushed by the rest of the elite field.

Here's some straight talk about a subject that is
rarely discussed, even with the doctor. According to
the wives tale book of medicine, "constipation is
mans' deadliest disease" and "death starts in the
colon." Where did these adages come from? Are they
still relevant today?
Judging by the number of ads in the media for stool
softeners and laxatives, times haven't really changed
with concern over constipation. In fact, it may be worse
than ever.

My recipe for success has a key ingredient, and
that has been "RECOVERY". Without proper recovery, I
couldn't possibly keep going day in and day out.
MAP has been an amazing element in my daily
workout plan. I have faithfully taken 6-8 tabs each
morning, before workouts/ races. It wasn't until I was
plagued by a medical hamstring injury, that I decided
to try using MAP as a post-workout recovery tool
as well. I raced hard one day, then had a mega-
workout the following. My hamstring was very sore, as
were both quads. Rather than my usual recovery drink,
I took 8 MAP tabs immediately after the workout
(along with some pretzels and the remainder of my
electrolyte drink). Because I was experiencing such
soreness, I feared I wouldn't be able to even walk for a
week. However, I woke to find myself in nearly perfect
condition, raring to go again! The hamstring issue
was a non-issue, and my quads didn't have a hint of
soreness!
Amazing. Really amazing. Sure, I may be
tired and wasted after intense workouts, but MAP
gives back quickly, all that I need to get going again on
a productive workout or successful race.

What's the secret to enduring performance? |

Simple answer: Provide for the essential needs and
don't over stress the capabilities.
If you were given only one car for your entire lifetime,
and that's all you would get for your personal
transportation needs, how would you treat it? Would
you let the oil run low or run out? Would you put in
cheap gasoline? Would you neglect changing the oil
and air filter? Would you run it red line RPM? Would
you put the accelerator to the floor and screech the
tires? Would you neglect checking the tire pressure?
I am doubtful there would be any yes answers to the
above.
What about the body that you want to last for 100 years
of good service? Would you give it fast food, sodas,
artificial chemicals, vegetables doused in pesticides,
meats with hormones and antibiotics? Would you
poison it with drugs and alcohol? Would you push the
caffeine to keep it going when you knew it was tired
and needed rest?
