Q and A with Dave Scott

From Brenda in Salt Lake City:

I am trying to work out what is the optimum nutrition for me during an Ironman bike segment. Should it be to take in as many calories as possible?

I figure I am burning probably 600-700 calories an hour over 6 hours. Should I try to get in that much if my stomach can take it?

    Thanks,

    From Dave Scott:
Brenda, don't replace a calorie to a calorie!

Could Lead Be in You Too?

Athletes with low levels of lead poisoning do not perform optimally. They may also suffer from medical problems such as high blood pressure, kidney problems, slowed reaction times, and decreased endurance. The toy recalls have many parents concerned about contamination in themselves and their children but have you considered that it may be affecting you too?

Children's Hospital of LA has seen a 25% increase in lead testing since the recall of Chinese toys. According to the CDC, any lead level above 9 micrograms per deciliter is unsafe, but new studies suggest that levels as low as 2.5 micrograms can cause lowering of math and reading skills. In truth, there is no safe level especially to the developing brain of the child or in the mature adult. Lead exposure can lead lowered IQ, ADD, ADHD, behavioral problems and even mental retardation. Here is a list of some common signs:

Last Years Winner of Ultraman Hawaii

Jeff "Landshark" Landauer is one of the best ultradistance athletes in the world. He is last years winner of Ultraman Hawaii. He had some tough going this year with the death of his mom right before the race and did not place as well as he hoped, but fought hard in her memory nevertheless.

We welcome Jeff to our Team BioBuilde for 2008. For a full bio click here. Following is his story of this years Ultraman race. Its fun reading and I know you will enjoy it.

    Ultraman Nov. 23rd - 25th
    Intro:
I started training for this years edition of Ultraman with the hopes of giving it another run for the overall victory, if not a top 3 finish and tweaked my training schedule with the hopes of improving were I felt I needed to. Even the best laid plans can be derailed by life and so it was for me this year. I had arrived 3 weeks before the race to acclimate and get my last few key workouts done in and around the Ultraman course. Everything was cruising along until I could no longer get in touch with my mom, she and I would talk everyday so I could keep her up to date on my trip and training. After 3 days of not getting a response from her I phoned her neighbor to check on her but still no answer. Finally my aunt drove up from the Bay Area and after knocking on the doors and windows she called the police and that's when it was discovered that my mom had passed away. I got the phone call late Thursday night Nov. 8th and was in complete shock. The next day I rebooked my plane ticket and caught the first flight back to Sacramento to take care of her affairs. I was truly reeling from her death and other personal issues that I was dealing with and was just about ready to call everything off and stay in California until I spoke with my girlfriend and she smacked me upside the head saying "There is no way that you can't race, you have to do it for your mom!" I knew Kaitlin was right, even though I was a mess mentally I had to go to honor my mom and the race. My mom would have been pissed if I didn't. A week later I booked my flight back to Hawaii.
