Q and A with Dave Scott

    From Conrad in Northern Ca:
I have been taking MAP. I am 63 yrs. old. Three weeks ago while exercising on my bicycle I hit a patch of black ice here in Northern Ca. and fell causing a fracture to the Trochanter bone just below the hip. It has been pinned and I am in recovery. Any suggestions on ways to expedite the healing process?

The Muscles and bone are still in low grade pain. I am getting weekly P.T.

    From Dave Scott:
Bone healing is a complex question, however there are several components that will enhance bone integrity. . .

Running a marathon with my 13 year old son

    by Luis Alvarez

MAP made a great difference at the marathon with my 13 year old son from

The idea of doing a marathon (26.2 miles) with our children, I believe, is something all running parents have in mind. I have a 13 year old son and I always thought I would have to wait several years before I could run a marathon with him, at least until he reached 18 years old but by then, of course, he would be interested in running after girls and not 26.2 miles...

Here is a great swim drill!

Are you interested in some of my views on health and fitness?

A few weeks ago I was interviewed for podcast by Ben Greenfield, a fitness trainer and coach in Spokane, Washington. Since we see a lot of athletes in our clinic we discussed how we work with them to improve fitness and health. I think you will find these ideas very applicable to your own health, at least I hope so.

    Swimming with Dolphins

    by Kevin Moats

One of the unique pleasures of training in Kona is the magical experience of swimming with dolphins. In the 20 years that I have done Ironman and 4 years since I have started training in Kona on a regular basis, I have only swum with dolphins 8 times. It is totally unpredictable, happens rarely, but when is does, it is as close as one comes to a totally mystical, magical experience more akin to seeing a Unicorn.

On the morning of New Year Day 2009, I headed out with friends for an easy swim to the King Buoy- the half way point to the Ironman Swim Course turn around point in Kailua Bay. A strong South swell was up and it was cloudy and two cruise ships were in port- typically not conditions conducive a dolphin encounter. However, on our return, about 200 yards inside the King Buoy, I saw 2 dolphins swim beneath me, grey /blue silhouettes rising up from the deep sandy bottom. We saw 10 fins about 30 yards away. We all headed toward the pod of Spinner Dolphins and instead of swimming steadily away, the dolphins seemed to slow to let us catch them.

For the next 45 minutes, as we swam lazily back into the Kailua Bay Pier, we were constantly surrounded and swarmed by different pods (20 to 30 dolphins per pod). We could hear them chattering and squeaking.. . .
