The BodyHealth Newsletter Protein Recovery
Jan 7, 2009

Greetings,

Happy New Year. A new season begins. Its been quite a few years since I completed my first triathlon, Ironman Hawaii, October 1982. This November I completed Ironman number 35 at Ironman Arizona. Speaking of anniversaries, this marks the 5th year in writing this newsletter and to the thousands of you who receive it, I thank you for your support and your friendship. We endeavor to continue to earn it in the coming year. May it be your best year ever.

D.I. Minkoff, M.D.

Q and A with Dave Scott

    From Terry:
What advice do you have for triathletes in their 40's, food wise, to keep the middle age spread under control? Something to help metabolism speed up?

    From Dave Scott:
If we could just eat the magic bullet and keep the "spread" under control, I'd be in a different business! There are several "things" that you could weave into your daily routine that will help to maintain lean body mass and hold the fat increases at bay. Here's a check list that might give you a few reminders for a leaner you!

    Mothering and Triathlon

by Brooke Hanley Davison of Team BodyHealth

This past year found me engaging in what to me was a new sport, triathlon. Competition is not foreign to me, yet the sport of triathlon at my ripe young age of 36 was a new endeavor. What started out as first as just a simple local race in the summer of 2007, has turned into a passion in my life that is now taking me into the pro ranks of this rapidly growing sport. I raced the 2008 season as an amateur and maintained an undefeated season, which both surprised me, and inspired me, as an athlete, yet even more importantly, as a mother.

    Captain Ed's Journal

December has brought about more change for me and my wife (and the little one on the way...). We left sunny Savannah, GA and arrived to the capitol on 13 December 2008. I will be working at Ft. Myer (adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery) for my new posting with the 3rd Infantry Regiment, the oldest unit in the Army. We are looking forward to living close to D.C. and all that it has to offer.

Does this training plan make me look fat?

By now most of you have started your preparations for the '09 season are probably crawling out of your hibernation caves and getting back out on the roads or back into the gym to begin the base phase of your training. Taking a break after a long competition season is a great way to give the body and mind a break and with the lack of miles sometimes comes the addition of a few pounds on the scale.

    Happy New

By Cherie Gruenfeld of Team BodyHealth

I'm an athlete and I live in California. Over the years I've come to discover that I'm not unlike many other West Coast athletes: I celebrate New Year's Eve at 9:00 when the ball comes down on Time Square in New York. Then I quietly head off to bed thinking about kicking off the new year with a Resolution Ride in the morning. Sound familiar?

But just because we don't imbibe champagne and engage in late night revelry, if you're like me, you spend a few moments indulging yourself by thinking about the past year and the twelve months ahead. So let me share a few of my New Year thoughts with you.

    - I want to finish every race with a smile like Chrissie Wellington's. I'll never fly through a race course like she does, but I'd love to feel the pure joy of the adventure as she seems to.

    - I'd like to run like Craig Alexander. I've always believed that a great Ironman race is all about the run. And nobody has ever done it better or smarter than he did in Kona last October.

    - Whatever it is that Hillary Biscay has - I want some of it. While the rest of us take time off to recover after a big effort, Hillary simply moves on to the next race. She continues to thrive doing ten or twelve Ironman races a year. Most of us consider that to be a death wish. And this year she got her first Ironman win in Wisconsin - one week after racing Ironman Louisville! Whatever it is that keeps her going like that, I'd like a little of it myself.
