Greetings,
This week: MAP reaches the 23,500 ft summit; Coach
Steve Ilg wins; Brooke Davison: New Years
Resolutions; Dave Scott Q and A; Captain Ed's
Journal.
Have a great week.

Some time ago, the idea of climbing the
Aconcagua (23,500 ft approx) came to my mind.
Since then, in preparation, I began climbing the most
important mountains in Mexico: Popocatépetl,
Iztacihuatl, and Pico de Orizaba with the purpose of
bringing my original idea into reality. Most of this
climbing training takes place in winter, after the IM
season ended, and it gives me the chance to combine
different exercising.

From Dean M: Mr. Scott, I have a
question
regarding your nutrition video. If I am doing a split
workout for an upcoming 70.3 do I pre, during and
post consume calories, or do I use a combined
number for both workouts? The program I am doing
may have an hour swim in the am followed by a 45
minute run in the p.m. By the time I have caught up
from the morning workout, it is time to eat extra for the
From Dave Scott: Your calories need to be
distributed throughout both sessions. The pre-fueling

| Captain Ed's Journal |
 |
Well, since my last entry, my wife and I have
crisscrossed the country to visit my family in Chicago
for Christmas and returned to the DC area. Upon
returning to the DC area, my wife and I began an
exhaustive 4 day house hunting extravaganza, which
resulted in a ratified contract on a home in Alexandria,
VA. After looking at close to 100 homes in the DC
area, we found what we think is a winner. We will
close in February and are excited to move in
and 'officially' begin our life here in DC.
Workouts this month have been great. I am getting
back on track after the Holiday season (took a few
days off here and there), and enjoying the
camaraderie here at the Old Guard.

At this time of year, many of us across the country
experience extremely cold temperatures. However
chilly you are feeling, I will wager that none of you has
experienced anything like the subject of our video of
the week.
Wim Hof ran a half Marathon (21 km) above the polar
circle in Finland. He wore only a pair of shorts and no
shoes. The ground (snow) temperature was 35
below.

New Years Resolutions |
|
|
|
I was asked recently about my 2009 New Years
Resolutions. I used to bristle at this type of question,
as it felt too invasive and might perhaps give away
something sacred and secretive about myself. Now
as a ripe old 37-year-old mother of three, I welcome
the question and just hope that whomever asks is
braced and ready for a long-winded philosophical
answer.
Resolutions are a wonderful opportunity for one to
reflect on the past year and make decisions about
what worked and what didn't. This might seem broad,
yet put in the context of sports and the athletic arena,
its something with which you can get quite specific
From this place, you can dive into your New Year's
Resolutions with excitement, wisdom and renewed
inspiration.
Personally, when I look back at 2008, I see the re-
awakening of my competitive spirit, falling in love with
a sport that brings so much to my life and my family,
and re-evaluating myself as a full-time stay at home
mother. I added an element to my primary job of
mother, and I have found that not only am I a better
mom, yet my kids are having a richer life experience.
I have been at home with my kids since Miller, my
oldest child, was born. Miller is now 7 years old and in
second grade. I was a mother who nursed all three of
my kids until they weaned themselves. I rarely left their
side, and I certainly didn't even consider leaving them
overnight. My very first time away from my kids was
during this past year when I went to St. Anthony's
Triathlon to race in my first race as an Elite Amateur.
I
won that event, and that weekend set the tone for the
rest of my undefeated amateur season, and paved the
way to my debut as a professional triathlete.
