| Q and A with Dave Scott |
 |
From A.N.: What heart rate is the
best to work out at? Is there a formula that I should
adhere to?
From Dave Scott: I'm not sure
what "formula" you are using for your heart rate
ranges, but let me clarify a couple of components of
your heart rate ranges . . .

| Protein for Detoxification |
 |
A person with a diet deficient in protein (amino
acids) will have a detox system that does not perform
at its highest level. To maintain health, the detox
system must be in full force to protect one from the
daily contact of environmental toxins and especially
during any detox program.
The detoxification pathways in the liver are based on a
two phase system, that require amino acids to work.
These systems are enzymes (made of amino acids).
Low protein/amino acid intake may mean low enzyme
levels.

Why do we need to eat protein and does it matter which foods that protein comes from? |
|
|
|
In the subject of nutrition perhaps the least
understood area is protein. In a recent survey that
asked "why do we eat protein?" the majority of
respondents responded with "for energy." Another
question in that survey asked: "Each of these foods
has 14 grams of protein: ½ can of tuna, a Balance Bar,
1 scoop of whey or soy protein. Does it matter which
one is eaten to get maximum protein nutritional value?
The majority of people said it did not matter as if each
had 14 grams of protein they were all equal.
In question number one, it is partially true that proteins
provide energy but that is not the main reason why
our
bodies require protein.
In question two, yes it does matter which of these
proteins you choose to get maximum protein
nutritional value! The body can use the
protein in tuna almost two times better than the others
mentioned.
This article is an effort to clear up these
misunderstandings so that an athlete can be smarter
in his nutrition and his supplementation and get much
better results from workouts, and prevent breakdown
and illness.
Here is the protein 101 version:
Our body is built of protein. In fact there are more than
50,000 different proteins in the human body. These
proteins make up our organs, bones, tendons,
ligaments and blood, and also many of our hormones
(insulin, growth hormone), our immune system, our
neurotransmitters and all of the enzymes of
metabolism, digestion and detoxification.
