Back in 2008, I signed up for Ironman
Louisville at the end of August in 2009. I
then got an email from two friends of mine
stating that they would sign up for IM
Cozumel if I signed up as well. They were
three months apart - which was very close,
but hey, anything for friends right? So I
signed up with the intent to race hard for
Ironman Louisville and do my best to recover
and get a solid day in for Ironman Cozumel
three months later.
Now fast-forward to August 29th, 2009 at
Ironman Louisville. I had a great race and
placed 11th in age group and 89th overall.
There were 8 Kona slots in my age group and
wouldn't you know it, 1 athlete had already
qualified and 2 others passed. So I was
going to my first World Championships!

The past month of training has been
fantastic. I am close to finding a great
balance between strength and endurance
performance and my current training path is
progressing along very well.
At the end of January, I performed extremely
well on my unit fitness test.
My unit fitness test is comprised of the
following:
5 mile run, Standard: 35 minutes
185# bench press, Standard: 25 reps
Pull-ups, Standard: 20 reps
300m shuttle run, Standard: 57 sec.
40-yd dash, Standard: 5.7 sec.

For your track workout, try adding 1200
repeats with 400 jog in between sets. Studies
show that 1000-1100m is the max a person can
run all out. So the 1200 is a great
indicator. :

Yesterday, I came back from the climbing the
mountain, which I consider part of my pre
season training. It was a very big learning
experience, and perhaps, one of the times I
have felt death very close
up there.
As many other weekends, the
plan was to climb Iztaccíhuatl, which
the highest mountain in Mexico (17,126 ft
over sea level). It is 1:30 hour distance
from Mexico City . For its shape, it is known
as the Sleeping Woman.
We arrived approximately at
6.00 pm where we planned to build our base
camp, this at 12,467 ft altitude. Around 9.00
pm we already have had dinner, and ready to
"sleep". Not quite really sleep,
because in a tent and at 29 degrees, it is
not easy to fall asleep.
