Just the other day I was sitting with a former professional cyclist at the park and I was lamenting about my recent ailments, minor injuries, kids' sicknesses, and the myriad of reasons that my training has been less than par. He looked at me and with frankness in his voice, said, "everyone gets sick, everyone crashes, and the best rise above it all to be ready to perform." At the time, just a day after coming off of 5 days of high fever and still feeling downright horrible, this comment wasn't what I was looking for. However, it was spot on.

Q and A with Dave Scott

In brick workouts I was able to hold a 10 minute per mile pace for IM. But on race day it ended up 13 minutes per mile. What should I be doing for the next year to improve that?

    From Dave Scott:
At least 11 weeks prior to your IM race, complete your last brick 3 weeks before your race. Practice alternating two bricks: ODD week: Run-Bike-Run and EVEN week: Bike-Run. The goal would be to run approximately 60 percent of the Bike & Run segments close to Half IM pace. The benefit is two fold: 1) it teaches your body to burn fuel at a higher workload and 2) it enhances muscle adaptation for your long upcoming IM race.

    Here's the plan:

Are you Tired of Being Tired?

Would you like to boost your energy levels dramatically - and be more alert in seconds?

Does it ever happen to you that even after a full night's sleep, you get a 10 am lull? So you have another dose of your favorite caffeinated beverage and make it until lunch, but then by 4 pm it happens again? . . .

    I have a recommendation.

    Oh no!

A disappointed salesman of Coca Cola returns from his assignment to Israel. A friend asked: Why weren't you successful with the Israelis? The salesman explained, "When I got hired, I was very confident that I would make a good sales pitch. But, I had a problem. I didn't know how to speak Hebrew. So, I planned to convey the message through three posters.

    Setting Goals

by BodyHealth Team Member and Ironman Age Group World Champion Cherie Gruenfeld

There are few people on the face of the planet more goal-driven than triathletes. We set our race schedules with goal races. We swim against a clock, do bike time trials and run intervals, always striving to beat a previous time or a competitor. You'd think we'd be experts at goal-setting.

Let me share a story that leads me to believe otherwise.

Some years ago, while in New Zealand, I met a very gregarious Aussie who told me he intended to do his Ironman race the next day in 10 hours and 30 minutes. When I queried him about previous IM experience he replied that he'd done Australia the year before in 14 hours, to which I replied: "That's quite an improvement. Are you trained for 10:30?" His reply was a big grin and the following explanation: "My girlfriend's flying in tomorrow night and arrives at 6:30 pm. I figure I'll finish at 5:30 and can make it to the airport in time to meet her."
