With the 2008 season underway, I find myself asking
what every racing triathlete asks about this time of
year: What can I do to improve my performances? This
exercise usually leads me to current magazines and
websites, looking for the newest equipment or latest
training technique to put in my arsenal. But this year
I'm looking in another direction. I'm looking to the past.

| Q and A with Dave Scott |

From Elizabeth, Demerest, N.J.: I
am trying to get faster and not get injured. Will short
run bursts of 10-15 seconds benefit me or should I
just try to gradually run a little faster each time I go out?
From Dave Scott: The short bursts of 10-
15 seconds to enhance your speed for endurance
event have application during the off-season or early
pre-season. A set of 6-12 pick-ups not blasting bursts
will prepare the muscles, tendons, and connecting
tissue for a slightly higher intensity. These short pick-
ups should gravitate in to a longer segment(s) of 20-
45 seconds over the course of your pre-season
training.
The primary goal should be ...

| New Job at 1st Ranger Battalion |
 |
The benefits of MAP continue to prove
outstanding for me. Here in my new job at 1st Ranger
Battalion, life is busier than I have ever experienced at
any of my other jobs. What that often means is
conducting a great workout in the morning for Physical
Training, coming back to the locker room, grabbing a
quick shower and then heading straight up to the
office for a long day of planning, coordinating, and
computer work. I absolutely can not afford to be sore
or sluggish as I head into my day. MAP absolutely
won't let it happen.
After brutal interval workouts, intense strength
workouts, or long cardio sessions, I am rarely sore or
sluggish as I head into my day.

I started using MAP a few years ago after
talking to one of the employees running the St.
Anthony's Triathlon booth.
I especially treasure my MAP in the longer
distances
and now that my 22 year old son is competing in
triathlons -1 have him using it also! I never suffer from
cramps and credit my use of MAP for my ability to
continuously train for different events .... thanks! - Mary

Training for a Double Marathon |
|
|
|
by Jeff Landauer
Back in '05 I had my first serious dose of triathlon
when I crewed for a friend at the Ultraman World
Championship on the Big Island of Hawaii, which led
me into the sport.
Ultraman is a 3 day triathlon stage race consisting of
a 6.2 mile swim followed by a 90 mile bike on day one
followed by a 171 mile bike on day two ending with a
52.4 mile double marathon. Any one of these days, in
itself, could be considered quite an accomplishment!
In '06 I competed in my first Ultraman and on day
three managed a 7 hour 26 minute double marathon,
averaging 8:30 miles.
A lot of people were surprised when I told them my
longest training run was 24 miles a week and a half
before the race. My coach (Jack) and I started out with
10 mile runs at a 7:30 mile pace but considering I had
only taken up running in October of '05 I had a difficult
time maintaining that pace so we adjusted the time to
8 minutes per mile and used this as our bench mark
for the bulk of my training. Jack had me ...
