We want it, we need it, where do we get it?

In a previous series, we learned about sleep and some methods and techniques to help optimize our sleep. Now that we're better rested, it's time to get energized! In this series we'll learn about human energy needs and production, the U.S. and global energy drink markets, and what we can do to stabilize, optimize, and enhance our energy sustainability.

In some ways, Nature has made it easy to understand the "traceability of energy" given that most life on Earth receives energy from the sun. We learned in school that plants absorb the sun's rays and through photosynthesis produce energy. This energy is then transferred to both animals and humans. The food that animals and humans consume has energy stored in protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

    Running Well Off the Bike

Simple in concept, complex in execution, - Running Well off the Bike is the key to a successful Ironman.

The following is an attempt in 500 words or less to distill of all the I have learned in 25 years of racing and 42 Ironman races, from an Ironman PR of 8:43 at Ironman Japan 1991 to the 50-54 Age Group World Ironman record of 9:26 in 2006.

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your re com mended daily allowance of vegetable products.

    Limits are in our heads

Less than a month ago, walking on the mountain with my 13 yearsold son and some friends of his, the idea of trying to get to the top of the Iztaccíhuatl (the second highest mountain in Mexico, and one of the highest in No rth America) with an elevation of 17,712 ft . came to our minds.

After some preparation training the day for trying the summit finally arrived. Forecasts predicted good weather and everything was ready for José Manuel my son, and me to start our climbing.
