| Why do we need to eat protein and does it matter which foods that protein comes from? |
 |
In the subject of nutrition perhaps the least
understood area is protein. In a recent survey that
asked "why do we eat protein?" the majority of
respondents responded with "for energy." Another
question in that survey asked: "Each of these foods
has 14 grams of protein: ½ can of tuna, a Balance Bar,
1 scoop of whey or soy protein. Does it matter which
one is eaten to get maximum protein nutritional value?
The majority of people said it did not matter as if each
had 14 grams of protein they were all equal.

Well, another year and another Skyline 50K for
the Jukester. Last year was my PR 5:19. Given I have
been kicking ass this year with my racing, I set a
stretch goal for 5:15. That was ambitious for this
course. As usual, I didn't train specifically for the 50K,
as ultra training is not anywhere similar to Olympic
distance tri's or half marathons. My longest run was
13 miles and that was 3 weeks prior to the 50K.

| Mid Season Break 2009- Back to the French Alps |
 |
by Kevin Moats:
As I was climbing the Col de Galibier for the second
time in 4 days, I suddenly realized why riding in the
Alps is so special, two words- Geometry and
Diversity.
As for Geometry, imagine 2 sides of an 90 degree
triangle. The vertical leg is elevation change and the
base is distance. Although the Rockies are actually
higher than the Alps, the Alps are far far steeper. In the
Rockies it is not unusual to rise 3,000 ft in a 30 mile
climb. In the Alps, you can rise 6,500 ft in 12 miles.
The difference between 5% and 10 % Grade is not a
mere 5%, but is in fact twice as steep or 100% harder
(10%/5%.). The highest paved mountain passes
(Col) in the Alps are only 8,500 ft above sea level, but
you ascend from a mere 1,000 ft in 20 miles. Yes,
there are some very long and hard rides you can do in
the US, but none so beautiful and that pass through
medieval villages along the way.
