Q and A with Dave Scott

    From Skip:
Your last article described a carb and protein fluid replacement drink. Are these 2 separate drinks or is there a drink with both ingredients? Are you able to provide a few names of these drinks? Finally, in terms of timing when to consume such replacement drinks; is the drink at the same time as taking the MAP pills? Thanks

    From Dave Scott:
Accelerade was the original drink (Fluid Replacement Drink) that introduced a 4 to 1 carbohydrate to protein ratio in solution. The carbohydrate concentrate of all the FRDs falls within

Are You Training Hard and Still Fat?

We have a solution! You aren't lazy, you aren't eating that bad, your body is craving out of proportion to what it needs. Guess what, it needs help.

What would that ideal help be?

    MAP FOR STRENGTH TRAINING

I started taking MAP a week ago and I am encouraged by the early results. I tried your suggestion this morning of taking 10 MAP tablets before my weight training session, and if repeatable, the results are unbelievable. I have been lifting weights for several years, and have been at the same level for over a year (a common phenomenon). I try for a 4-1-4 (concentric, rest, eccentric) second rep, and with each exercise, I record weight used, reps, and time under load (TUL). Obviously, there is variability from session to session, but this morning's workout was the first time that all most all recent TULs were exceeded. For a 54 yr. old long time recreational athlete, this is quite encouraging.

    Best regards, Bob

When is the Best Time to Take MAP?

From the developer of the MAP:

"Dietary proteins require an average of 3-6 hours to be digested. Thus, their constituent amino acids are not available in the bloodstream until the digestive process is completed. Therefore, dietary proteins intake is not recommended, prior to physical activity, because physical activity and digestive functions could interfere negatively. On the contrary, MAP's constituent amino acids are absorbed in the small intestine within 23 minutes after taking MAP. Therefore, in accordance with clinical studies*, by taking MAP 35-40 minutes prior to physical activity, its constituent amino acids are available in the bloodstream since the beginning of physical activity thus optimizing muscle's strength, endurance and recovery sooner and better than those provided by taking dietary proteins or protein supplements. To conclude, I confirm you that the best moment to take MAP is 35-40 minutes prior to physical training."

Cherie Gruenfeld and "Circling the Drain."

Last winter I told you about my 96 year old father, and about the joy I got when I watched him ride his bike. He's always taken good care of himself and has been rewarded with good health.

Shortly after the article appeared, it looked like his good luck might have run out. It was a tense and stressful experience for him and our family, but I'm happy to say he's healthy once again and back on his bike. What transpired during those eventful weeks proved to be a powerful reminder about attitude, belief and possibilities.

Below is an article about the experience written by my husband, Lee Gruenfeld, and published on Ironman.com as one of his regular monthly columns.

Forgive me for being serious just this once. Thankfully, it doesn't happen often.

I'm not normally prone to a lot of touchy-feely romanticizing about spiritual matters that are largely the self-serving inventions of people to whom concepts like "evidence" and "science" are regarded with suspicion. The way I look at it, anybody who believes in homeopathy, astrology, oxygenated water or wheat grass deserves to get swindled.

But one thing I've come to believe in strongly ¬ because the evidence for it is overwhelming ¬ is the mind-body connection and the extraordinary degree to which the mental can affect the physical. The examples are legion and there's no sense repeating the oft-told stories, so I'd just like to throw in another one that might have some relevance in the endurance sports world.

Last Thanksgiving my wife Cherie wrote a piece about her father for her monthly column on the BodyHealth.com Website . Glenn is 96, and Cherie spoke movingly about how he still rode his bike every day, rain or shine, even though he lives in western Washington, where there's plenty of rain and little shine.
