| Death Ride 7/12/08 |
 |
Coming into the week before the Death Ride I
couldn't have been more stoked, I had tied my
personal best around Lake Tahoe with a time of 3:11
hours with a 22.2 mph average speed and was
feeling strong. The rest of the week was rough as I
found myself getting many hours of sleep but not good
quality so my coach and I backed off a bit so I wouldn't
get sick and this left me with a big question mark on
how my '08 edition of the Death Ride would pan out... I
was pleasantly surprised!
My friend Seth Wealing and I drove to Markleeville
Friday afternoon to pick up our ride packets and the
smoke from all the fires around the area reduced
visibility to less than a ½ mile. I wasn't concerned
about the effects of the smoke but was bummed for
Seth that he wouldn't be able to see the amazing
beauty that the terrain has to offer.

| Captain Ed's Journal |

Well, this month has been focused on rebuilding
my fitness after a June that saw me go through an 11
day training exercise with 14-20 hour days, and a
week long fishing trip to northern Manitoba, Canada
with my father. While the fishing trip was a bit more fun
than the 11 day training exercise, there wasn't a lot of
exercise going on in northern Manitoba.

Winner Ironman China (1st Female 55-59)
I'm a busy physician and
Ironman triathlete and I have been training and racing
in triathlons since 1983!
As the years passed, I noticed a steady decline in the
amount of training my body could handle. I also took
note of the fact that I was slowing down faster than
other women my age. In 2007,1 embarked on a quest
to qualify for Kona and added strength training and
MAP to my swim/bike/run regimen.
Since taking 5-6 tablets of MAP daily, my strength and
especially recovery have greatly improved. Simply, I
can handle more training than before... .and the
results are in! Recently, I won my age group at the
Ironman in China, reaching my goal... I qualified for
the "Big Kahuna".
I look forward to toeing the line for the Hawaiian
Ironman this October, with MAP as the central piece of
my total training plan.

Xterra in Flinstone, MD yesterday was brutal -
omg -
so I tried something I don't usually do for good
measure - I popped 8 recovery (MAP) pills after and 6
hours later took 5 more - and just before bed 3 - let
me tell you something - I woke up feeling like I didn't
do a thing yesterday - let me just tell you something
else . . .

Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3 - Like Lemmings to Lubbock |
|
|
|
by IM Age Group World Champion Cherie Gruenfeld
It's the end of June and that can only mean one thing:
It's time for the Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon. This
event has been around for 19 years, but it's still a fairly
well-kept secret. It's in Lubbock, Texas, which is not
your "garden-spot" locale. However, the old faithfuls
make the trek back every year as it if were Woodstock.
Why is that?
One of the reasons (actually two of the reasons) are
race directors extraordinaire, Mike and Marti Greer,
who put on an old-fashioned Half Ironman race where
they cater to the athlete in every way (short of making
the course easier). Although, since 1994 when
temperatures read 113 degrees out on the run
course, they've included this on their web site: "We
may alter the race based on extreme weather
conditions." So I guess they'd even make the course
easier if it helped the racers.
