Master Amino Acid Pattern (MAP) Winner's Circle
Susi Chandler
Susi Chandler, Winner at Valdese, MAP, Trideltathon, Cornelius, and Latta Plantation Triathlons (age group 50-54).
I've been a competitive swimmer since childhood, and in my 30's I began including some running and recreational mountain and road biking in my physical fitness routine. When I decided to try a triathlon at age 49, I was hooked. Until 2003, I've exclusively done XTERRA triathlons, winning the USA Championship for women ages 50-54 in 2001 and 2002.
In early 2002, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent lumpectomy and radiation therapy, and several months later, bilateral mastectomies. After turning 50 in 2001, I noticed that my training gains were frequently negated by nagging injuries, more so now since I am older and my body has been through so much. With the blessing of my husband, who is an orthopaedic surgeon, I began using MAP this year. I now find that I am able to train well without chronic injuries, and I plan to continue using MAP as a regular part of my regimen.
This year I am focusing on sprint road triathlons, as two rib fractures sustained in 2002 (that were in my radiation field) in a mountain bike crash are just now healing. I am also participating in century road rides with my husband. Thus far in 2004, I have competed in five road triathlons and have won my age group in all of them. My husband and I have also completed four centuries and have several more on our schedule for Sept. and Oct.
I have been a member of the XTERRA Ambassador program for 3 years now
