From the Desk Of Cherie Gruenfeld, 8 time Age Group World Ironman Champion
It's Oct. 12 th and the 2008 Ironman World Championships are "in the books".
For Chrissie Wellington and Craig Alexander, it was a very good day.
And for this age-grouper, it was also a good day and the conclusion to a good season of racing.
In 2008 my key races were:
- Ironman Arizona
- Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3
- Vineman 70.3
- Santa Barbara long course
- Ironman World Championships in Kona
In 2007 I had done this same set of races with good results, so I had a benchmark for 2008.
Each year I go into the season with a set of goals, which always include improving finishing times and winning the age-group in Kona. These goals are not dissimilar to those set by many triathletes, but when you're 64 years of age, as I am, lofty goals such as these are not always realistic. But when I crossed the finish line in Kona this year, it topped off a season that included faster finishing times in every key race and the age-group win in the World Championships. 2008 was a good year for me.
For every triathlete, finishing well starts by getting to the start line healthy and prepared for a good day. For me, MAP is a key ingredient in this and I intend to continue this strategy. Next season I'm 65 and that means there are course records to be challenged.
Good Luck
