From Jim in Ann Arbor:
Do you suggest training through an injury? A lot of days my calves are sore and I am wondering if I should run or not. Usually if I take a few days off they are still sore. Should I wait longer until its all gone?
From Dave Scott : “Soreness” does not necessarily denote that you have an injury. Generally sore calves are caused by an increase in total distance, a higher intensity flat or hill session. The delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) is a result of micro-tearing of the muscles which causes swelling and pressure in the fatigued (calves) muscle.
So what do you do? Light exercise (cycling), not running for 1-2 days after the HARD session is recommended. Additionally, a seated not standing calf and Achilles stretching routine would help. This should be incorporated on all days – particularly your sore days. Massage and any “hands-on” treatment would be beneficial.
Lastly, your legs can still be sore but a light run (20-40 minutes) on day 3, post hard session is advisable.
