From Andra in Tampa:
Dear Dave,
I want to tell you that since I have taken your advice and started taking MAP my recovery has really been great. I used to be sore and tired all of the time and now I feel like a new person. My question for you is, is water running worth the effort? With shoes or not?
Can I get the same workout by using a tether and not swimming laps if I do a hard workout for 30-45 minutes?
Thanks,
Andra From Dave Scott:
Andra, several studies have shown that in lieu of running water swimming can maintain fitness specifically if these sessions include lactate threshold (pace for approximately 60 minutes hard) or VO2 sessions (5 12 minutes) of very hard exercise. The draw back of water running is maintaining the shock or eccentric muscle load in your legs. Is it a compliment to your outdoor running? Well I would stay on the roads
unless you are injured.
Regarding your question about tether swim sessions verses lap swimming the answer is yes, tether swimming is a very good substitute, primarily to emphasize a high elbow catch. Due to the stretched state of the cord, the ability to stay in one spot will force you to make a quick catch. I like this technique adaptation provided it doesn't negate your body roll or head position.
Andra, remember to include back, breast and fly into your sessions. These three strokes will enhance the muscle activation in your shoulders, back and stomach. (20-30% of total workout time)
Lastly, you will need to incorporate interval sessions to maintain your lactate threshold economy. i.e. 12 x 2 minutes, rest interval 30 seconds. Start off moderately hard and finish hard over the final 45 seconds.
Andra, the results will speak for your routine. If you get faster throughout 2008 stay with it. If not, get back into the pool.
