From Carl in
Aspen:
Dear Dave, I live in a very hilly area and am racing in a flat IM in the fall. In the past my concentration on hills left me ill prepared to stay in the drops for 6 hours during a flat bike ride. Should I just do more on the trainer to get ready for this? Thanks
From Dave Scott: Carl, I am familiar with your terrain in the Aspen area and I would NOT advise you to do your main or longer sessions on the trainer. Developing rhythm and cadence adjusting to the wind are all paramount for your agility adaptation.
My suggestion in your flat Ironman race is to maximize your skills. I am assuming that in Aspen you are out of the saddle on some of the climbs – I.E. Maroon Bells, Independence Pass? This is an asset Carl! Standing up on a flat course every 10 – 15 minutes reduces the muscle strain in your low back, shoulders, and equally important to activate the muscle recruitment in your glutes and quads at different levels from staying aero.
Historically, the bike times (splits) for the pro's and amateurs on a flat course are slower than an undulating or slightly hilly course. Again, I think the change in position, though it temporarily compromises your aero position, is advantageous.
Carl, you are lucky to have the mountains of Aspen and ride towards Carbondale once a week – its flatter!!
Good luck,
Dave
