Q & A with Dave Scott

Your last article described a carb and protein fluid replacement drink. Are these 2 separate drinks or is there a drink with both ingredients? Are you able to provide a few names of these drinks?

Finally, in terms of timing when to consume such replacement drinks; is the drink at the same time as taking the MAP pills?

Accelerade was the original drink (Fluid Replacement Drink) that introduced a 4 to 1 carbohydrate to protein ratio in solution. The carbohydrate concentrate of all the FRDs falls within 5.8 to 8.0% sugar by volume. Accelerade is within this range. The addition of a small amount (5 grams per 12 ounces) of protein has been shown to enhance several key areas of fueling. The three primary benefits of the carbohydrate/protein mix are:

1. Enhances recovery post exercise.

2. Pushes glucose in to the cell at a faster rate than a carbohydrate FRD.

3. Prolongs endurance capabilities.

Too much carbohydrate or protein will cause GI distress.

There are several other companies that have followed Accelerade and the very conclusive science behind Fluid Replacement Drinks with carbohydrates and protein – including Cytomax and Hammer Nutrition.
