From
Jeff in Mobile :
Do you do strength and stretching every day in addition to the SBR workouts? Which are the key strength exercises for each sport?
From Dave Scott:
Jeff, Stretches can be implemented on a daily basis. These should include dynamic (i.e. leg swings, standing on a single leg) and static stretching. Additionally, facilitated, or proprioneuromuscular fralitation (PNF), stretching with a partner is very effective. PNF stretching should be done with a qualified coach, or trainer. This will be a good topic for further discussion in future Q&A's.
Regarding strength training, yes, absolutely yes! Include strength training ideally three times per week. If you have limited time during the week, two times per week will still be effective.
The strength training sessions should include:
!. Full body exercises (3-5) that incorporate your quads, abs, back, shoulders, and arms in to your routine. These exercises greatly enhance the increased production of Human Growth Hormone which elevates fat oxidation, cortisol production, elevates body metabolism, and most importantly increase entire body strength. Examples of these exercises are: over head squat press, dead lift, squat to overhead press, kettle ball over head swings. A trainer will be able to instruct you on the proper mechanics of these exercises.
These exercises are vital year round:
Stretch cord, lateral walks, sumo walk, stretch cord hip extensions, and hip abduction. On a step – forward, back, side, down, stretch cord half butterfly pulls, stretch cord side twists.
I have numerous programs on my website to expand this selection. Lastly, the exercises during the competitive season listed above should go to muscular fatigue – 2 to 4 reps shy of failure.
Good luck,
Dave Scott
