From Peggy in San Diego:
Do you suggest periods during the year where you don't swim bike or run at all?
From Dave Scott:
Everyone should have their own definition of leading a healthy life. Healthy living may encompass physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual parameters. Peggy, to measure your health or anyone's health on whether your swim, bike or run everyday does not measure optimal health.
So Peggy, here is the quick answer:
1 You need to maintain some form of aerobic activity throughout the year. The morphine “like” release of endorphins is a pre-requisite for your sanity.
2 The physical response of aerobic exercise is physically and psychologically overwhelmingly positive! Heart and lung function improves, blood chemistry is enhanced, body fat drops, and lean muscle mass increases.
3 If you stop swimming, biking, and running and do not substitute another rigorous form of exercise, the physiological decline is rapid.
Now, if your periods are short, 5-8 days, with no activity, these can be beneficial for the mind and the body. Inactivity can rejuvenate your health and allow yourself to reflect, rebound, repair and restore your body. Keep ‘em short, but do not fret about periodic breaks.
Good luck,
Dave Scott
