From: Jeff B. in Phoenix: Which seat angle do you think is best for half and IM distance races?

Dear Jeff,

The optimum seat angle is 74-78 degrees for a half or Ironman distance. Simply, the more ‘relaxed' seat angle (traditional road bike geometry is 73 degrees) opens up the hip angle when your foot is at 3 o'clock, which is the beginning of the power phase. Having an open hip angle reduces the potential tension on your low back and more importantly minimizes the ‘cramped' feeling on the bike – thus making it easier to run.

The one potential draw back is that you need to be set up properly over your bottom bracket. The spindle of the pedal should have a direct vertical line (plumb line) from just below your kneecap. Too far forward will take away the muscle innervations from the glutes during your pedal stroke. The glutes should ‘fire' immediately upon applying pressure at 3 o'clock. If they are not – have your bike proportions checked!
