Master Amino Acid Pattern, MAP
Q & A with Dave Scott

Dave Scott is the most recognized athlete and coach in the sport of triathlon. He is a six-time Ironman World Champion and the first inductee into the Ironman Hall of Fame.

Please send your questions to DaveScott@BodyHealth.com. Some will be selected for response in his MAP newsletter column.

From Zeke:
Dear Dave, Why is it good to do standing sets on the bike?

From Dave Scott:
Zeke, changing your muscle recruitment pattern will optimize your potential economy on the bike. Adding segments of standing enhances quad and glute strength which will benefit all elements of racing – hills flats, and wind.

Try inserting 2 sessions per week of 20 – 30 minutes either in the hills or flats that include 50% standing. i.e. 10 repeats of 2 ½ minutes. Each repeat would have approximately 60 – 90 seconds of standing. Mix it up with different gearing.

The intensity should be moderately hard to very hard with a short rest of 15 – 45 seconds between repeats. Zeke, try it for 4 weeks and your flat time trialing will get faster.

Good luck, Dave
