Mothering and Triathlon
by Brooke Hanley Davison of Team BodyHealth
This past year found me engaging in what to me was a new sport, triathlon. Competition is not foreign to me, yet the sport of triathlon at my ripe young age of 36 was a new endeavor. What started out as first as just a simple local race in the summer of 2007, has turned into a passion in my life that is now taking me into the pro ranks of this rapidly growing sport. I raced the 2008 season as an amateur and maintained an undefeated season, which both surprised me, and inspired me, as an athlete, yet even more importantly, as a mother.
I am often asked how I balance mothering three young children (7, 4 and 2), and training for triathlon, which can take up to 20 hours a week. I seem to answer with the practical nature of myself, and offer up that fact that I have a part time nanny, a supportive husband/family, and an incredible community to train among. However, the real truth lies in the mere fact that triathlon makes me a better mother, and mothering clearly makes me a better triathlete. So its not about how I balance things, its more about how the full schedule of life balances me. It's a gift, in fact.
“Everything in moderation”, right? I appreciate how hard it is to keep triathlon training moderate, yet mothering being my number one priority forces me to embody the old adage. There is no doubt that I do not get the same amount of training done as the majority of the professionals, and I don't ever have time for naps, yet I what works for me in my life. Balance and moderation…keys to a happy mother, and thus, happy children.
Of course, one aspect that is of utmost importance to me is keeping healthy. When I am at my optimal health (which is VERY rare!), I am able to train at my peak capacity and recover quickly in between sessions. MAP is a key part of this piece of my life. Since making MAP a part of my daily routine, and relying on its effective assimilation and absorption, I have been healthier than since before having children. I spent the first 4 years of child rearing fighting every cold, very susceptible to strep and flu viruses, and far too much time feeling sub-par, with a very weakened immune system. Now since taking MAP, I have been stronger in general life and have been far less “sick”. I am able to maintain a high level of training and intensity in my life and get the work done, and be the mother I believe my children deserve.
