New Years Resolutions

 Brooke Hanley Davison

by Brooke Hanley Davison of Team BodyHealth

I was asked recently about my 2009 New Years Resolutions. I used to bristle at this type of question, as it felt too invasive and might perhaps give away something sacred and secretive about myself. Now as a ripe old 37-year-old mother of three, I welcome the question and just hope that whomever asks is braced and ready for a long-winded philosophical answer.

Resolutions are a wonderful opportunity for one to reflect on the past year and make decisions about what worked and what didn't. This might seem broad, yet put in the context of sports and the athletic arena, its something with which you can get quite specific From this place, you can dive into your New Year's Resolutions with excitement, wisdom and renewed inspiration.

Personally, when I look back at 2008, I see the re-awakening of my competitive spirit, falling in love with a sport that brings so much to my life and my family, and re-evaluating myself as a full-time stay at home mother. I added an element to my primary job of mother, and I have found that not only am I a better mom, yet my kids are having a richer life experience.

I have been at home with my kids since Miller, my oldest child, was born. Miller is now 7 years old and in second grade. I was a mother who nursed all three of my kids until they weaned themselves. I rarely left their side, and I certainly didn't even consider leaving them overnight. My very first time away from my kids was during this past year when I went to St. Anthony's Triathlon to race in my first race as an Elite Amateur. I won that event, and that weekend set the tone for the rest of my undefeated amateur season, and paved the way to my debut as a professional triathlete.

So what worked in 2008? Courage, adventure, stretching beyond my comfort zone. Pushing my children to trust in someone other than their parents. Trusting my coach and his process, and sticking to what I know inherently works. I wish this for everyone. The opportunity to push and be pushed, and be open to all that is available, however it might look, is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Be open to the possibilities and be willing to stretch beyond what you originally thought you were capable of.

To be the mother and the model I want to be for my children, I spend almost every night reflecting on the day's past events, what worked, what didn't and perhaps re-evaluating my game plan for the next day….in essence making a New Day Resolution. Apply this to sport/athletics and you will be amazed at what you can achieve. Best of luck and Happy New Year!

"Prior to taking MAP as part of my daily regime, I caught every bug that my children brought home from school. Now with MAP on board, my immune system is strong and I am able to keep most bugs at bay. Thus, I am able to maintain high intensity training sessions and recover in between, instead of using energy to fight off viruses. MAP supports my overall well being as a mother and as a triathlete.

I trust BodyHealth.com and MAP intuitively and wholeheartedly and recommend it to any athlete looking to achieve peak results as well as overall consitiutional health."
