--------
Just a month ago, Luis suffered severe laceration injuries to both feet and a badly sprained ankles when jumping into the water at IM Arizona. He managed to finish but it was an heroic struggle.
I personally thought it may take months for him to recover, if at all. The last BioBuilde newsletter has pictures of his lower legs and they look nasty ugly.
But nothing in the world could keep the only man to ever have completed all current Ironman races down. He went to Ironman Brazil only a month after Arizona and did a personal best 10:06 with a personal best marathon of 3:32! He took second place in his age group and qualified again for Kona. Holy smokes! Well done Luis! Here is the full story from him……..
Thank You BioBuilde …
Just a month ago, right before beginning Ironman Arizona I very badly injured my feet and sprained both ankles jumping into the water. This Sunday at Ironman Brazil on May 27th I again broke my personal best and qualified for Hawaii , I also crossed the finish line second in my age group!! So this time I would like to tell you what to do when, by accident you end up with an injury.
First of all “Do Not Panic.” Maybe not every thing is lost and that “time out” will be more helpful than you think. The first action to take, almost in all injuries is apply ice , a lot of ice, and then, ice again! it works miracles, the faster we do this the faster we will recover, the second step will be compression, immobilization and elevation, better yet when the injury is, like mine on the feet these can get swollen pretty easy and this will delay the recovery…
Of course, as soon as possible go to the doctor; take some X rays or MRI. Once the emergency is taken care, begin planning the best way to recover.
Not being able to use your feet or legs or arms for a while does not mean to stop training, but you do need to keep immobilized the affected part.
In my case, I couldn't train anything for two weeks which was a relief for my body after finishing Ironman Arizona . During that period I took BioBuilde as if I was on the top of my training and of course I also was following all the doctor's advice and my rehab. With only three weeks for my next Ironman I trained only what I could that didn't compromise either the injuries on my feet nor my sprained ankles. Swimming only for the first week. A week after I began biking and when the injuries on the feet got better and the ankles where not swollen we organized a 19 hour bike ride of more than 200 miles , of course very sloooowww. During the whole route my heart beat never went over 140. The next week I participated in an Olympic triathlon in which I was 9 th of my age group with a little pain on my feet and ankles, this made me decide not to run until my next Ironman.
The result, after only training swimming, very little bicycle and almost no running was that I finished Ironman Brazil in 10: 06” with a marathon of 3:32, a personal best. It helped to have the base I have of 17 years competing and the 48 Ironmans I've finished. And of course I am certain that BioBuilde was a very important factor for such a fast recovery and the result of this Ironman.
