--------
For several years my base training for a good Ironman season is to begin in winter and go to the mountains for high altitude training.
Starting in November I began. For the first time I climbed to the top of the 4 th highest mountain in North America , El Pico de Orizaba, almost 18,000 ft . high. We left home Saturday afternoon and arrived at 11:00 pm to sleep for some hours on the lower part of the mountain at 11,000 ft .
At 2:00 am, we woke up, took our MAP and coffee and started to climb. We did the 7000 feet trek up and down in 8 hours. It was a very good time. Amazingly, Sunday evening I was having dinner at home.
This adventure was successful thanks to MAP. It was my main meal together with Gatorade for calories, electrolytes and hydration. To digest and absorb other more complex protein foods is very difficult under these circumstances of low oxygen and high stress on the body.
This kind of training gives me strength and fitness because climbing at such high elevations helps develop increased hemoglobin which goes in direct proportion with fitness. The next weekend I was nervous when a friend invited me to bike to San Miguel de Allende on Saturday and return on Sunday, which is 225 km each way totaling 450 km in a weekend. I had not ridden my bike more than 3 times in the last three months. Amazingly, I felt very strong in the 9 hours per day journey.
Now I know am ready for my Ironman season. Again, my meal consisted of MAP, Gatorade, couple of bars and, of course some servings of tequila for a night cap!
Happy Training,
Luis
