Since I am using MAP my recovery has been extraordinary, the best I’ve had in my life. I am 44 years old and have participated for 20 years in Olympic distance triathlons and 15 years in Ironmans. I am still breaking my marks.
Last Sunday at Ironman Austria I did a PR with a time of 10:06 with a marathon of 3:36 forty five days prior to the race, my challenge was to lose 8lbs. I was overweight. So I decided to make a drastic diet totally eliminating sugar, lowering dramatically my carbohydrates and the quantity of food. The problem was that being in a tapering phase of training, my quantity of exercise was decreasing, which meant I was going to burn less calories. That made losing weight a real challenge. But while I was doing less volume, the quality of workouts was increasing. With a low calorie diet the risk of injury was greater.
This last race was no piece of cake. I swam fast with a good current, and with the help of my Quintana Roo wet suit I was out of the water with a PR of 58 minutes. The bike was another story. It was very difficult with six very steep hills on each loop.
The run was a two loop circuit, completely flat, and filled with cheering people. I knew that I wanted to run my fastest marathon so I was watching my pace with the Timex Body Link system complete with GPS. Sometimes I thought I was doing good until the alarm came off indicating I was lowering the pace allowing me to correct it immediately. This is a very good tool for running a marathon because you always know your speed and don’t fool yourself into thinking you are going faster than you are, and you might not find out until the next mile marker. If that marker is even in the right place.
To achieve this PR my plan was simple, I took my MAP dosage before and after each day’s training. I took an extra dosage at mid day and another extra one at night to substitute for a high calorie protein at dinner. With this not only I lost 8lb but my cholesterol went down more than 130 points! I arrived at the race feeling 100% fit and lean. WHAT IS EVEN BETTER IS THAT I HAVE BEEN INJURY FREE FOR 4 YEARS WHILE COMPLETING MORE THAN 20 IRONMANS WITHIN THIS TIME.
