FROM THE DESK OF LUIS ALVEREZ
I have personally had the experience that after a long training season for triathlon, body and mind are worn-out. All one wants is to forget about all this for several months.
This usually happens at the end of year, when holidays are the excuse. To try to re-adapt oneself physically and mentally becomes difficult.
Something I have experienced during the last years, that has given me good results, is high altitude training in the mountains.
Since we live near Mexico City we are very close to very high mountains: El Nevado de Toluca at 15,355.ft., Iztaccihuatl at 17,061ft., Pico de Orizaba at 17,390 ft., These are some of the highest mountains on the North American continent.
I often go up into the mountains on the weekends. By spending a few days up there, sleeping there and just hiking around in the snow, I get excellent training.
During the present season I have run and bicycled very little, my aerobic training has been very short, but even within the week I have done high altitude training. What's amazing is how effective this actually is.
I was greatly surprised yesterday when I took my usual time trial test to assess my fitness. The results were terrific. My fitness with almost no running or biking for months is the same as at the end of the season. The high hemoglobin level helps to recover muscle strength lost in long aerobic trainings during the year.
I have found that in the mountains even walking around is a cardio workout. I found that even standing still at 13,000 feet my heart rate was 130-140 beats per minute. A slow jog takes you to the red line. Happy training. I'll see you at the races. Please come up and say hi.
