Testing for Toxicity

To date, there is no specific scientific test to measure the actual heavy metal burden inside the human body. In light of this, and in order to get a reasonable approximation of this amount, we have to resort to several subjective and objective indicators.

The subjective indictors are based on the fact that people who are heavy metal toxic often have multiple symptoms. To compile these, we suggest a Heavy Metal Symptom Survey. If one has more than 9 items checked off this list, chances are they could be heavy metal toxic and should be evaluated by a competent nutritionally trained health care practitioner.

You can download our Heavy Metal Symptom Questionnaire here.

The most common objective method used by healthcare practitioners to discover high levels of heavy metals is through measurement of the urine, stool or hair after giving the patient a nutrient or drug to increase the amounts of heavy metals excreted. When high amounts leave the body after one of these challenges is it considered evidence that high levels exist. Other practitioners are able to test the body using applied biofeedback (kinesiology) to discover high levels of metals.

Hair analysis for heavy metals is another method that is easy to use and can be done at home without great expense. It can show the presence of a heavy metal burden. Sometimes, however, in ill patients the hair may initially show low levels when the body burden is actually high. In these cases, treatment with Metal-FreeR will begin to get the metals mobilized and the hair levels will rise after several months. This is a sure sign that the body burden is high and Metal-Free should be continued until the levels come back down to normal and the symptom survey is improved.
