Greetings!,

We are having a beautiful spring in Florida. Maybe the nicest in years! For those who haven't seen it I am rerunning the article on radiation and what you can do with nutrition to protect yourself. This week I want to officially welcome a new member of the BodyHealth Team. Her name is Marisa Asplund.

To get to know her, see below. She is an amazingly gifted athlete and we are proud she is a member of our team. Have a great week.

Marissa Asplund

Welcome to our Team!

Professional triathlete Marisa Asplund has set herself a new challenge: switching from professional cycling to Ironman 70.3 triathlons. The former middle school teacher is based in Durango, Colorado and now focuses on making an impact in Ironman 70.3. Asplund's triathlon coach, Cliff English, is one of the world's top triathlon coaches and has worked with the best athletes in the sport since 1999. "There are many factors that are essential for success for elite triathletes. Body type, genetics, discipline, mental toughness to name a few. These components don't guarantee success but having them is essential. Marisa has all these as an athlete," English said of Asplund. "I expect her to have a very successful career in triathlon and feel she will have an impact and will 'break out' over the next 1-3 years."

Here is what MAP, coupled with some hard work, allows you to do:

Foot march 20 miles on Saturday with a 75-pound pack at a 13:20/mile pace, and come back strong on Monday with a relaxed 8-mile run, feeling strong the whole way.

As our training for this year's Best Ranger competition continues, the mileage and intensity have increased week after week. The harder we push our bodies to prepare for the competition, the more MAP responds and delivers.

On 3 MAR, we pushed ourselves for 18 hours straight, covering 30 miles with a 65-pound pack, completing two 20-minute (+) work capacity sessions, multiple military skill events, and medical training. While our bodies are conditioned to withstand punishment like this, MAP helps us recover quickly and start focusing on our next training session.

Train-Low, Race-High: Part 2 by Ben Greenfield

In Part I of this "Train Low, Compete High" carbohydrate restriction series from Ben Greenfield , you learned 4 reasons to think twice about eating carbohydrates before a workout, and that current research supports the idea that performing some of your endurance training with low carbohydrate stores and/or with low carbohydrate intake can actually promote the formation of multiple factors responsible for muscle repair, recovery and aerobic performance adaptations.

So how is it that reducing carbohydrate availability during exercise might actually increase the effectiveness of the exercise session? Without delving too deeply into the nitty-gritty science, it all comes down to the fact that the repair and recovery of skeletal muscle tissue is dependent on the "transcription" of certain components of your RNA. And a bout of endurance exercise combined with low muscle carbohydrate stores can result in greater activation of this transcription, as well as the activation of enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. In other words, by training in a low-carbohydrate state, you may train your body to recover faster and use carbohydrates more efficiently.

What should you do about the coming radiation?

Radiation is hard on a body. It shuts down the energy systems, produces apathy, mindlessness, and a feeling of no future. For a man or woman, that is the entrance to death's doorway.

While we hope that the nuclear accident that is occurring in Japan will be over soon, with no more danger to anyone, being prepared is important. Here's what I suggest:

Mental Toughness and a Positive Attitude

Most athletes fall under the category of "type A" personality. More is better... Pain is your friend... and no matter what the race results are, everyone is sure after the race that they could have done better. What causes this anomaly and why is it that these talented athletes can train so well and yet only some of them go on to actually race at the level that they train at?

In the age group athletes that I see with amazing abilities, it is only a select few of these folks that go on to actually compete at the level they are capable of. It is these folks that have a very positive attitude and positive self talk. There are people that are 'energy givers' and there are those who are 'energy sappers'. We all know who they are. The energy givers are the ones that you want to be around. They are always positive and upbeat. On a windy day they are the ones saying "what wind"? While the energy sappers are the ones saying "This wind is terrible". Just think about the mental images that those two sayings create - one positive and the other negative. Think about the emotions that each one of those sayings creates within you.
