Peter Reid's Triathlon Camp
D.I. Minkoff M.D. gave a lecture at Peter's Triathlon camp in Tucson a couple of weeks ago. The talk was How to Optimize Your Performance using Protein Therapy. In addition to talking about how endurance athletes can meet their protein requirements, we discussed the need for antioxidants with heavy training. I suggested that each serious athlete should do a blood profile early in the year to see if any deficiencies exist. There are laboratory tests that can be done to see if your antioxidant levels are where they should be to protect you from the oxidative stress of hard training. Looking at other things like vitamin levels, essential fatty acid levels and minerals is also important. One such test that your physician could order for you is called the Individual Optimized Nutrition (ION test) from Metametrix Laboratories. (http://www.metametrix.com/ION/)
The ION Profile includes
Functional Deficiencies Marker for Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and Folic Acid
Vitamins A, E, B-Carotene and Coenzyme Q10- (serum)
Essential Elements- (plasma)
Amino Acids - (fasting plasma)
Fatty Acids - (plasma)
Organic Acids - (overnight urine)
Lipid Peroxides (TBARS)- (serum)
Homocysteine- (serum)
This combination is absolutely fabulous to measure how well your nutrition is keeping up with your training. When deficiencies occur, this will result sluggish training, injury and poor performance.
